Design signals intent – beyond HAZOP

In essence, a HAZOP study is:

  • an audit of a completed design, that
  • explores possibilities and consequences of deviations from normal conditions of the design intent, to
  • make sure there are safeguards in place, for the
  • protection of Personnel, Public, Property, Product and the Planet

Before a HAZOP can occur, the design must be complete.

Unfortunately, many of today’s process and product designs are completed based on an unsustainable linear ‘take-make-waste’ model.  This model is often highly susceptible to shocks, does not absorb disruption well, and is difficult and costly to bounce back.

Many of today’s engineering designs have not yet started to move Towards Sustainable Engineering.

Today the design often signals DESTRUCTION.

Tomorrow demands that design signals REGENERATION.

We believe that the HAZOP technique can evolve to help design resilience and restoration into the process, using closed loop regenerative practices that are designed for:

  • no waste,
  • no harm,
  • repair, re-use, recycle and re-manufacture, with
  • minimal resource consumption, using 100% renewable inputs.

Imagine the potential for Personnel, Public, Property, Product and the Planet if HAZOP evolved into
RESOP© – Resilient/Restorative Operations – and tomorrow’s processes were modeled on ‘take-make-regenerate‘.

Ekkremon is actively exploring the power of closed loop regenerative practices, and brings a greater depth of knowledge to HAZOP facilitation by learning more about:

  • Biomimicry
  • Industrial Ecology
  • Circular Economy
  • Upcycling
  • Blue Economy
  • Compression Thinking
  • Project Drawdown
  • Project Regeneration
